A History of YALDING, Kent, England

DARBY and JOAN, PRIMROSE CLUB.
This club providing a social meeting place for our senior citizens, was launched by the W.R.V.S. on Primrose Day April 19th 1954. Initially meetings were held every other Tuesday afternoon at the Village Hall, with a seasonal Blossom Tour round the countryside, and a palatial Garden Party spread at Broomfield, at the invitation of Major and Mrs Aylesbury, then later at Bowhill House, the home of Patty Bowring.
The Autumn of 1968 had its problems, and at the first October meeting that year club members collected 33s 6d for the flood relief fund, when many people in the parish had suffered loss or damage to property.
At their 14th birthday celebrations on April 15th 1969 about 40 members, invited D & J friends from the Farleighs, and over 100 sat down to tea and a beautiful cake.
Initially called Darby and Joan, it was later renamed The Primrose Club.
In 1973 between 40 to 50 members attended the fortnightly meetings, and on April 16th that year Mrs Greta Daniels organised a Dress Show in aid of club funds. The proceeds, some £ 16, paid for a half day trip to Bodiam Castle on May 15th. A summer outing was also organised to Eastbourne.
