A History of YALDING, Kent, England

LIST OF VICARS.

In Yalding we have an exceptional roll of priests, with a few early gaps in a period when they were supplied by Tonbridge Priory.
LAURENTIUS  1184  It is known that he had been a rector prior to this date, and was still vicar in 1207.

 ROBERT PACE 1329  One year of office.
 GILBERT HUGHES  1330 Vicar whilst Hugh De Audley was Lord of the Manor, as recorded in the “Yalding Manor Records”.
 ROBERT HONEBERGH  1349  Died within the year.(Date of Black Death.)

  STEPHEN QUINNERELL   
  JOHN BURBACHE  1395  After nine years of office, moved to Elmley.
  WILLIAM SIBTHORP 1404  
  JOHN LOFTHOUSE 1424  Five years of office in which he was also Rural Dean of Malling in 1427, and in 1429 exchanged with John Smyth the living of Eastlying.
  JOHN SMYTH  1429  One year of office. He was admitted by Bishop Langdon on 3rd October, but resigned the next year.
 ANDREW SANDERS  1430  Previously served as rector of Gravesend 1399-1427, and rector of Dartford 1427-1430. He officiated as Vicar-General of Rochester for several years. The date he left Yalding is unknown, but it is stated that he died when rector of Mereworth in 1438.

During the War of the Roses, from 1455 - 1485, producing many national changes and heralding the end of feudalism, locally we went through a change of seven priests in those thirty years.

  ROBERT MILLER  1467 He served seven years of office before partaking in an exchange with Nicholas Dunlagh.
  NICHOLAS DUNLAGH  1474 Nineteen years of office after his arrival from the parish of St. James, Dover.
  NICHOLAS NONE 1493  He was a board member of enquiry into the Prebendary of the Great Mass at Malling Abbey.
