GARDEN SOCIETY.
After it is understood a lapse of some seventeen years, the current form of the Yalding Garden Society was created at a meeting held on 25th of July 1956 at Cleaves Hall. The cost for hiring the hall was 7s 6d. At this meeting Major J Licence of Orchard End was elected Chairman, Mr E T Constance of Lyngs Close was Vice Chairman, Mr Raikes Junior then of Wardes Moat was elected Treasurer and Mr Cannon of Lyngs Close was Secretary. `Mesdames' Frye and Lewis, and Messrs Dyer and Banks were elected Committee Members. Air Vice Marshall A E Borton of Cheveney, our local hero of the First World War, was elected the first President of the Society.
Mr Jim Worley of Court Lodge Farm expressed his interest by being prepared to make a donation to the Society's funds, and the meeting was informed that Mr Milsted , of the garage next to The George, was willing to present a Challenge Cup to the Society. Lectures and films were arranged for the coming winter, with a suggestion on the subject of organic gardening. The Aim of the Society was to `Promote good cultivation of gardens by holding meetings for demonstrations and discussions and by organising horticultural shows and competitions'. A special meeting was held at Cleaves on 30th October 1956, three days after the first Autumn Show on the 27th. This meeting was convened to adopt the rules of the Society, and was followed by the First Annual General Meeting. The membership at this time was 63, paying an annual subscription of 3s.
At the A.G.M. held on the 18th of March 1969, at which 65 members attended, Air Vice Marshall A E Borton relinguished his office, and became `Patron of the Society'. In his place as President, Mr Cable Pipe was elected - a great friend and benefactor of the Society.
